One Gospel, One Mission
September 29, 2026By Dr. John David Smith, President
Short-term missions are one of the great opportunities God has given modern followers of Christ. Each year, believers travel across cultures to share the gospel, provide medical care, train pastors and church leaders, encourage missionaries, and serve local churches. These experiences allow believers to see God’s work among the nations firsthand, use their gifts in meaningful ways, and develop a greater passion for His global mission.
Through Volunteer Student Missions (VSM), Baptist Medical Missions International (BMMI), Bible Training Center for Pastors (BTCP), Missionary Care, and other short-term ministry opportunities, hundreds of people participate directly in the mission of BMA Global. Every team contributes something valuable. Some meet physical needs, while others provide theological and pastoral training. Some strengthen churches, encourage missionaries, offer counseling and opportunities for rest and renewal, or help introduce the gospel into new communities. Together, these ministries demonstrate the many ways God uses His people to advance His kingdom.
The key to maximizing their impact is mission alignment.
Mission alignment means that every short-term trip supports the mission of God in general and the mission of BMA Global specifically. A team does not arrive with an isolated agenda or create its own ministry plan. Instead, it joins the work God is already doing through missionaries, national leaders, and local churches. The gifts and abilities of the team are aligned with the needs and goals identified by those who know the field the best.
This alignment transforms a good trip into part of a much larger kingdom effort. A medical team treating patients can help open doors for an established church-planting ministry. A BTCP team training pastors can strengthen leaders who will disciple believers and establish churches for generations. A VSM team can encourage missionaries, serve alongside national believers, and help young adults discover how God may use them in missions throughout their lives. Each trip may be short, but its contribution can produce long-term results.
At BMA Global, we like to talk about long-term short-term missions. The phrase may sound contradictory, but the idea is simple: a short-term trip should connect to an ongoing vision. Teams may return to the same location in consecutive years, build relationships with the same leaders, or contribute to multiple stages of an established ministry. The question must move beyond, “What can we accomplish during this trip?” to “How can this trip advance the mission of God where we will serve?”
Effective short-term missions always involve humility and partnership. Participants go as servants, learners, and fellow workers, not as people who have all the answers. One of the most important prepositions in missions is “with.” We do ministry with missionaries, with national leaders, and with local churches. These leaders bring cultural understanding, trusted relationships, ministry experience, and God-given vision. Short-term teams bring additional gifts, energy, resources, and encouragement. When these strengths work together, the entire ministry becomes stronger.
Preparation is another important part of alignment. Participants need biblical grounding, cultural awareness, ministry training, careful planning, and appropriate security preparation. Clear communication helps everyone understand the purpose of the trip and how each assignment contributes ot the greater purpose. Thoughtful follow-through and debriefing then help participants continue praying, giving, serving, and sharing what they have learned with their home churches.
Short-term missions should help ignite hearts for God’s mission. Participants often return with a larger vision of the kingdom, deeper appreciation for missionaries and national leaders, and a renewed commitment for their own churches. Some may even sense God leading them toward long-term missionary service.
Short-term trips have tremendous potential. When VSM, BMMI, BTCP, Missionary Care, and every other ministry team align with the mission, individual trips become part of one unified effort. Different teams bring different gifts, but all serve the same mission: working together to make disciples and establish churches among all nations.
