Spreading the Gospel: How Lifeword Partners Share the True Meaning of Christmas Worldwide

Christmas—the season of joy, lights, and giving. Is there anything more magical than this time of year? The chill in the air, festive trees, twinkling lights, and presents fill our hearts with excitement. But beyond the sparkle, Christmas offers a deeper, transformative opportunity. After all, it’s not just the most beloved holiday; it’s the most celebrated one worldwide.

This global celebration is rooted in the birth of Jesus Christ, the Messiah. Yet, what’s fascinating is how Christmas is embraced by both Christians and non-Christians alike. This creates an incredible opportunity for sharing the message of Jesus with those who may not yet know Him personally. Across the globe, Lifeword partners are seizing this opportunity, using the season’s openness to spread the Gospel.

In the Philippines, Christmas doesn’t just begin in December—it kicks off in September! “When September comes, the malls start decorating with all the Christmas ornaments to welcome the season,” says Bro. Pete Etabag, Lifeword’s Asia Pacific Coordinator. With over 86% of the Filipino population identifying as Roman Catholic, most have heard of Jesus, but many don’t fully grasp that salvation is a free gift from God.

“Most Filipinos believe they must earn salvation by following church rules,” Bro. Pete explains. This is where Lifeword and her partners step in. During the Christmas season, Filipino churches host special outreaches and one of the most impactful events is the Christmas Cantata. Choirs perform, drawing families and communities into churches where they hear the message of Jesus’ free gift of salvation.

In Lebanon, Christmas is also a time of high activity. “The whole month of December is Christmas-themed,” shares Bro. Joe Costa, Lifeword’s Western Asia Coordinator. Just like in the U.S., children eagerly wait to meet Santa and share their Christmas lists. Families come together to enjoy home-cooked meals and reconnect with friends. But amidst the festive rush, Bro. Joe and his family focus on hosting youth events and Christmas Eve services, teaching about the true meaning of Christ’s birth and the salvation He brings.

Meanwhile, in Ghana, Christmas takes on a vibrant blend of cultural heritage and Christian traditions. “Ghanaian Christians celebrate with feasts, music, and traditional dances,” says Bro. Hayford Jackson, Lifeword’s Africa Regional Director. The richness of Ghana’s culture is woven into Christmas festivities, making it an ideal time for Bro. Hayford and his team to share the Gospel through their outreach events.

Whether in the Philippines, Lebanon, Ghana, or here in the U.S., one thing remains constant: hearts are more open to hearing about Jesus during the Christmas season. Lifeword and its partners recognize this special window of opportunity to introduce people to the true meaning of Christmas—the birth of Christ and the salvation He offers to all.
