Navigating Faith and Freedom in France

The charge from Paul to young Timothy was to continue in the things he had learned, knowing it was Paul who taught them to him (II Timothy 3:14). Paul was basically saying, “Regardless of the circumstances, regardless of the challenges, and regardless of the conflicts – just do your thing.” This same charge applies today.
The first missionaries, after much prayer and fasting, were commissioned by the church in Antioch before they were sent out (Acts 13:1-2). We, too, must always make sure of our calling. Confirm with God that you are doing exactly what He has asked you to do. Adrian Rogers said it this way: “Don’t question in the dark what God showed you in the light.” Just do your thing by obeying Him.
The Holy Spirit is to be the divine director in all of your endeavors. The best place to do your thing is in the center of God’s will. Begin living out your calling by praying that He will guide and direct you every day in the contacts you make. Ask Him to open doors of opportunity, just like Paul asked the church in Colossae for the message of the gospel to be delivered. Just do your thing by knowing He placed you there and then by staying in step with His guidance. Do not get ahead of Him or behind Him by not going too fast or too slow. Moses told the Lord that if His presence was not going, he did not want to go either (Exodus 33:15).
Paul’s charge to Timothy was to continue. Paul was challenging this young man to not stop serving the Lord but instead to keep doing His thing which was to honor and glorify God in everything. In Acts 14, Paul is stoned in Lystra and thought to be dead. The disciples gather around him but he gets up and does what? He goes back into the city and then he and Barnabas travel to the city of Derbe. What happens there? According to Acts 14:21 they just kept doing their thing by evangelizing the town. Paul would later tell King Agrippa, “I was not disobedient to the heavenly vision…” Paul kept doing his thing of representing Jesus.

Don’t stop! Don’t quit! Keep doing the thing God has called you to do. Yes, there are many reasons to walk away, but consider this. In Acts 16 Paul meets a disciple named Timothy. If he had quit after being stoned in Acts 14 and gone home, he may have never met Timothy. Who would have blamed him? Certainly not John Mark. Paul just kept doing his thing even after a disagreement with Barnabas and continued on his second missionary journey with Silas. At times, you will question why you do what you are doing. You know the right answer is to do it for Jesus, but the reality is that you have doubts, fears, and anxiety.
Just do your thing. Keep praying, keep connecting with lost people, keep evangelizing, keep discipling, keep developing leaders, keep loving others, and keep following Jesus. Focus on walking daily with Christ and just do your thing by making sure you put Him first in your life. Begin each day by spending time in prayer and in His word. Surrender yourself to Him, moment by moment, over and over again. Ask the Holy Spirit to fill you and control every area of your life, family, and ministry. Who you are in Christ is far more important than what you do. Paul’s heart desire was to know Christ more intimately, so he pursued Him daily.
Just do your thing but make sure you do not over focus on “your thing.” Evaluate regularly to make sure that there are no idols creeping into your life, especially yourself. Here is the real test: Is your desire to make Christ known or to make yourself known? To properly put Christ on display you must be willing to remain unseen in the areas of recognition and affirmation. They can be nice but they can also be dangerous. John the Baptist paved the way here by saying, “I must decrease and He must increase.” Applause has a way of corrupting the heart and you must be willing to just do your thing for the audience of one – Jesus!
Just keep doing your thing by abiding in Christ which will provide you with the tenacity and determination to continue even when the circumstances, challenges, and conflicts seem insurmountable. My life verse is Galatians 6:9, “Be not weary in well doing, for in due season you will reap, if you faint not.” Allow me to say it another way: “Just keep doing the thing that God has called you to do!” Stay in the race, continue the fight, advance the gospel, and do not quit!
