Lifeword Global Update: Reaching the World with the Gospel
August 19, 2025Charlie and Whitney Wagner are excited to share their journey and calling to a Creative Access Nation in Asia. As a couple deeply committed to spreading the gospel, their story is one of obedience, transformation, and faithful service.
Whitney’s story begins in Conway, Arkansas, where she grew up attending Antioch Baptist Church. It was there, as a fourth grader, that she came to faith in Christ. Surrounded by a nurturing church family, Whitney’s spiritual roots grew deep. Her faith continued to mature through her years at Central Baptist College, where God would not only continue shaping her but also lead her to meet her future husband, Charlie.
Charlie hails from Wiggins, Mississippi, and came to know the Lord in a transformative way during high school, attending Vardaman Street Baptist Church. It was in that season that God began to deeply sanctify and prepare him for something more. Charlie also attended CBC, and during his time there, he had the opportunity to serve as an intern in Asia with the Johnson family. That year marked a turning point in his life. Charlie fell in love with the people, the culture, and the powerful work God was doing there.
After returning to the U.S. to finish his senior year–and to marry Whitney—the couple began praying about how God might use them long-term. In October 2018, they answered the call. By January, they had packed their lives and moved to Beijing.
Since arriving in Asia, Charlie and Whitney have served in a variety of roles. Both taught at the international Christian school, with Charlie leading the Bible department. Beyond the classroom, they poured themselves into local ministry: leading the middle school youth group, discipling young believers, and sharing the gospel with both locals and the expat community.
Their ministry has continued to evolve. Charlie now serves as an elder at an international church plant on the west side of the city, a role that brings both great responsibility and joy. While church leadership takes up much of their time, they remain deeply committed to evangelism and discipleship in the community.
They also invite continued prayer and support. They ask for prayer that God would prepare the hearts of those they are reaching and give them wisdom in sharing the love of Christ in ways that can be truly understood. They also ask for protection and provision for the local churches in their country, and for strength and discernment for church leaders as they walk the delicate balance between respecting local laws and remaining faithful to the truth of God’s Word.
Let us continue to lift up the Wagners in prayer and support as they faithfully serve where God has called them.
